Best Practices
Flowers must be dried before analysis on GemmaCert. Apply the GemmaCert wet flower testing protocol to test wet flowers.
No. Calibration is automatic and is performed automatically prior to analysis and no user intervention is required.
The GemmaCert Customer Portal provides several functions for statistical batch analysis and graphical display. These features can be used to track batch growth progress, analyze plant maturity, determine batch uniformity, and help plan for the next season.
Yes ! You can travel with your GemmaCert device. Be sure to handle carefully during transport. We recommend the GemmaCert protective case for transport available online at the Active CBD store .
GemmaCert contains delicate components. Be sure to place it on a flat, stable surface and avoid moving it suddenly. Avoid placing on vibrating surfaces, such as near an air conditioner, compressor, etc.

Gemma in Latin means flower bud and Cert is short for certification .
Technology
Currently, GemmaCert devices can only be used by an Android smartphone app . An iOS app will be released in the future .
Start-to-finish analysis, including automated calibration, should take up to five (5) minutes.
Cannabis is a heterogeneous natural product. The variance between two or more flowers, even from the same plant, can be significant.
Both analytical methods provide results based on an estimate. To do this, HPLC uses chemical reference standards. NIR spectroscopy applies a reference database. Variance between HPLC results is also common. Results are dependent on the analytical method applied, instrument calibration, sample preparation, operator skill, and interpretation of results. Therefore, HPLC performance is prone to human error.
The GemmaCert team is constantly working on new scanning capabilities and these will be released from time to time, most likely via over-the-air software updates.
The patented technology combines infrared spectroscopy , image analysis and motion mechanics, while analysis is performed by applying machine learning based on sophisticated algorithms.
GemmaCert measures Total THC and Total CBD . The results assume a conversion rate of 0.877 of THCA and CBDA acid to the active form of THCA9 and CBD, respectively. Accordingly, totals are calculated as percentages of total weight using the formula below.
- Total THC % = 0.877× (%THCA) + (%Δ9THC)
- Total %CBD= 0.877× (%CBDA) + (%CBD)
Note that some cannabis products on the market present the totals as simple sums, without taking into account the conversion rate. Note that GemmaCert results are percentages of total weight while HPLC results are percentages of dry weight. GemmaCert repeatability for:
- The soil is up to 0.6
- The flower is up to 1.5%.
Therefore, if you want to accurately find the composition of a particular flower, we recommend that you average the results over several analyses.
Yes, GemmaCert is the only device on the market capable of analyzing cannabis by 100% non-destructive means. There is no need to homogenize samples by grinding to reduce potential measurement errors.
Minimum detection threshold 0.2% (THC, CBD) for Essential and Pro and 1.0% (THC, CBD) for Lite . Maximum detection threshold 30% THC, 20% CBD.
